Policy Management Authority

The SAFE Identity high assurance trust community is governed by the SAFE Identity Policy Management Authority (PMA), a member-driven committee chaired by SAFE Identity. The PMA ultimately determines how identity is governed in the SAFE Identity ecosystem.

The PMA is comprised of a select group of individuals and leading organizations in the health industry. Members of the PMA include healthcare organizations that rely on SAFE Certified Credentials, organizations that purchase SAFE Certified Credentials, and SAFE Certified Credential Providers (both commercial and enterprise).

The PMA advises SAFE Identity on goals and objectives, works together to identify and resolve roadblocks to cross organizational trust and approves policy changes that affect the security and interoperability of the SAFE Identity ecosystem. We put the decision-making privilege in the capable hands of the PMA rather than making decisions unilaterally on our members’ behalf. In return, SAFE Identity provides guidance to the industry participants in achieving their goals for security and risk mitigation.

The first-hand knowledge gained by the PMA members through their participation in the decision-making process contributes to the transparency of the SAFE Identity high assurance trust community and builds trust across the ecosystem.

Benefits of the PMA

Vote on the standards and policies that govern the SAFE Identity Trust Framework

Collaborate with other members of the PMA and the SAFE Identity staff to resolve roadblocks related to federated trust between organizations

Participate in technical working groups where you can roll up your sleeves and solve challenges related to identity and cryptography

Influence vendor products in the identity space by suggesting new testing requirements asserted by the SAFE Qualified Products List Lab.

Working Groups

PMA Members have the opportunity to join and participate in SAFE Identity working groups. These working groups are established by the PMA and are designed to address critical identity-related problems in healthcare by recommending solutions that make data exchange better and more secure between individuals and organizations. The solutions defined by these groups will further evolve the procedures and policies of SAFE Identity to meet the industry’s needs:

Technical Policy Working Group

Provides input and recommendations to the PMA on technical matters associated with the SAFE Identity Bridge including policy updates, operational updates and evaluating new applicants.

Procurement Working Group

Goal is to establish procurement guidance and language for interfacing with vendors and partners in a federated environment.

The Document Management System Working Group

Helps to define desired behavior for document flattening and develop test cases that can be published as an optional certification track on the QPL

Rely on the SAFE Trust Framework

The integrity of digital credentials varies widely from one provider to the next. Figuring out who to trust, why to trust them and how their security aligns with your needs can be a challenge. This makes trust hard.

The SAFE Identity Trust Framework, carefully cultivated over 15 years, can make trust much easier. The Trust Framework defines the policies and standards necessary to use secure and interoperable digital credentials that meet your needs. Issuers certified by SAFE are compliant with these policies and standards, ensuring this same security and interoperability across the ecosystem – and making trust a lot simpler for you.
